Discover the Mornington Peninsula with Us Millionaires Walk - Sorrento This stunning cliff top walk has historic significance as it was the first time the Union Jack was used to claim possession of Australia. The breathtaking water views across Port Philip Bay to the Bellarine Peninsula, Melbourne and Mount Dandenong are amazing. Also, you will get an insight into how Melbourne's elite spend time at their summer mansions .
We started this easy walk, which is about 1.5kms return, from Point King Road at Portsea. Not far from the start is a white trig station and a stone monument. This is the place where on the 9th March 1802, Acting Lieutenant John Murray, commander of the 'HMS Lady Nelson' took possession of Port King, later to be renamed Port Philip Bay, in the name of His Sacred Majesty George III of Great Britain and Ireland. It was the first time the Union Jack was used in Australia for this purpose.
As we followed the path further, we found a few gates to go through. It feels like you are walking through the front yards of peoples houses! Some of the houses are quite magnificent and many have jetties with beautifully built boat houses. On the water you will notice a constant parade of boats passing as well as the Queenscliff-Sorrento Car and Passenger Ferry.
When you reach Lentell Ave there is a high gate to go through. You can either walk back to Point King Road via Point Nepean Road or return via the walk, as we did. Below is an assortment of photos we took.
