Flinders
Flinders is located 86km south of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula at the point where Western Port meets the Bass Strait.
The town was named by George Bass after his good friend, Matthew Flinders and was settled in 1854.
Flinders is the home of Flinders Bread, which sold throughout the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne from the 1930's. Flinders Bread is now baked in Dandenong.
Flinders is close to both surf and safe beaches and has unparalleled views of Phillip Island, The Nobbies and Seal Rocks. Centrally located near many wineries, the town offers a diverse array of cafesand restaurants, as well as golf, fishing, antique and curio shopping as well as a wide range of comfortable accommodation options, and of course, the Flinders Blowhole.
Flinders is a peaceful retreat and a popular holiday destination that has flourished with designer homes during recent years. The local golf club, established in the early 1900s, is one of the most scenic courses in Australia.
Cape Schanck
Cape Schanck is the southern most point on the Mornington Peninsula. It separates the wild ocean waters of Bass Straight and the slightly calmer waters of Western Port. The main attractions are the lighthouse, the boardwalk to the rock platform and the magnificent ocean views. Cape Schanck is also home to the Ace Hi Ranch and Wildlife Park . They have horse-riding, a wildlife park and accommodation. The International Armoured Military Vehicles Collection is also on the Ace Hi Ranch property. More information on Cape Schanck.
Shoreham
Farming was the mainstay of the district until quite recently, when it began to attract high quality holiday homes and several bed and breakfast establishments. The steep pine clad beaches around the outlet of Stony Creek feature rocky platforms and reefs and are popular areas for family exploration. Home to the Ashcombe Maze and Water Gardens, one of Australia's largest and oldest hedge mazes, with complementing gardens and rockeries.
Point Leo
Point Leo is a noted surfing location with a static population greater than Shoreham. It developed as Melbourne's closest surfing venue after interest in the activity was stimulated in the late 1950s. Today there is a sizeable camping area which attracts a small fee in peak periods and a number of holiday homes. The old surf lifesaving club is now a private home. The beach is backed by substantial dunes and is excellent for surfing, wave jumping, wave skiing, body boarding and swimming. It is about four kilometres north of Shoreham by road, just off the Flinders-Frankston Rd.

Follow the walking track from the Kiosk towards the Cape. This short track takes you to the centre of the wooden staircase and boardwalk that descends to the beach and rock platform. There are several lookouts with magnificent views over Pulpit Rock and the Devil's Desk which were created millions of years ago. Care should be taken if you chose to walk on the rock platform as unexpected waves may wash across. Cliff Top to Pulpit Rock Boardwalk Map |
Bushranger Bay - Cape Schanck
Follow the Bushranger Bay track from the Eastern Car park and be prepared for the some of the most breathtaking scenery. The Victorian Government purchased this section of the park from adjacent farms in 1977. The track finishes at Bushranger's Bay, a sandy beach surrounded by bassalt cliffs. The round trip walk takes approx 2 hours. An extension of the track forms part of the Two Bays Walking Track and leads to the Rosebud-Flinders Road (approx 3km). This track passes through shady banksia groves prior to continuing north (across the road) into stands of eucalyptus and banksia and through to Greens Bush (10km). |
Blowhole Track - Flinders - 1.2km return |
Track is accessed from Boneo Road car park. This walk is over huge bluestone boulders to the ocean. For more details see our visit to Flinders Blowhole. |
